Some years ago I had a powerful desire to want to learn the Hopi | Hopílavayi language. Something deep inside me, somewhere in the labyrinth of my subconscious, there was a thirst to absorb all the Hopi language I could retain in my spirit.

My need to want to immerse myself in learning how to say basic, useful Hopi words most likely stems from my love and admiration of the Kachinas. Absolutely everything about the Kachinas illuminate my mind, heart and spirit. My Kachina dolls, along with Hopi Lightning Stick, never cease to inspire me, wether in my art or life in general.

So now, after all these years, I’m finally getting around to learning useful, basic Hopi words that I can hopefully utilize in my daily life. I’m taking careful steps now: easy, basic words and then, eventually, super-useful phrases. I’m aware of the different dialects and will decide which one to focus on when the time arrives.

NUNA Project | 2018

Project Quechua: NUNA Project

NUNA in Quechua means Spirit / Soul.

The NUNA Project is an offshoot of Project Quechua. I began the NUNA Project in 2018 as way to unwind from creating non-stop.

While focusing on conjuring up works of art for Project Quechua and constructing my second Quechua Runasimi book, I will also randomly produce NUNA Project related art.

In order for me to “take a break” from Project Quechua, I will go full speed ahead brainstorming and creating NUNA Project related artwork. When I create I get into this Hyperfocus mode and learned to overcome “writer’s block”, creative dry spell by creating even more. Yes, I do take time away from creating by living life, reading one too many books, movies, etc.

NUNA Project focus has mainly to do with various subjects and art forms dealing within the Spiritual, Indigenous, Subconscious, Supernatural, Music or Cyberpunk realm: Think TUROK • Tal’set (Nintendo 64) & all his awesome super-high tech weapons — that’s me.

Quechua • Runa Simi

The three main languages in Perú are Spanish, Quechua (Runa Simi) and Aymara. Perú is home to an abundance of indigenous languages. For someone who loves overloading on (useful) information, and thrives on always learning something new, knowing that Perú is home to a plethora of indigenous languages fills me with so much joy.

These days, I've been learning a lot of words and phrase in Quechua. It's taken me roughly one full week to learn about 10-15 words and phrases. Once I reach the one week point, all the Quechua I was leaning just comes to me naturally. Today would be the one week mark, and without having to force myself, I'm going to reload and learn a whole new set of words and phrases. I've learned to just let my subconscious and my thirst for knowledge lead the way.

You see, in Perú, we use a lot of words or phrases in Quechua in our daily life when we speak Spanish. So, learning Quechua has been a super-enjoyable, satisfying and wondrous experience. 

Once I've fully downloaded as much Quechua into my heart, soul and mind, I will proceed to learn as much Aymara as I can.

*I don't find it odd at all, but outrageously natural that I can randomly enjoy and savor the taste of a Cherry or Vanilla Coke, and can pretty much have Beef Jerky for breakfast, lunch and diner. Both, Coca and Jerky, originally come from the Quechua words: Cuca (Coca-Cola used coca leaf extract in its products from 1885 and until about 1903) and Ch'arki (a Quechua word from dried alpaca or llama meat).

I'm currently reading two amazingly important and heartbreaking books: Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee: An Indian History of the American West by Dee Brown and The Last of the Incas: The Rise and Fall of an American Empire by Edward Hyams and George Ordish.

 

I'm currently listening to all the 

Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind soundtracks.
